Top Tips For Keeping Children Safety Around Medicine

Annually, more than 67,000 children in the US go to an emergency room for potential medicine poisoning. That’s one child every eight minutes.

Almost all of these accidents happen because a child got into the medicine while unattended. Safety features on the packaging, like child-resistant caps and flow restrict ors, are helpful, but the best way to prevent these types of accidents is to keep medicines out of the sight and reach of curious children.

Here are a few steps parents and caregivers can take to help keep children safe from medicine poisoning:

Store medicines up and away and out of sight from children. It is important to put medicines away after every-use, even if you are going to use the medicine again in just a few hours.

“Think” like a child. Children are explorers. Even though medicines stored in nightstands or purses might be out of sight, they are still within reach of a curious child. Be sure to remove medicines from such locations and to inspect the ground where children might find medicine when unattended.

Help guests keep children safe. Many of us carry medicines with us in coats or purses. When you have guests, store their bags and coats up high to help ensure children can’t find any medicines your visitors might bring with them.

Don’t take shortcuts. It’s easy to think that because we use a medicine regularly we should keep it handy or leave the lid loose. Don’t. Accidents can happen fast and in only a few seconds children can get into medicines that could make them very sick.

Be mindful of more than just medicine. Many household items need the same care that over-the-counter and prescription medicines do. Products from vitamins to hand sanitizer should also be stored up and away and out of sight to ensure children don’t get into trouble.
