September has been designated as Baby Safety Month for over 20 years. Its sponsor, the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA), chooses a different safety-related topic each year. In 2012, the topic is the safe use of second-hand, hand-me-down and heirloom baby gear.
The current economic times have seen an uptick in the purchase of second-hand products from garage sales, auctions, thrift stores, friends and family.
Although buying new products that meet current safety standards is always the best possible option, second-hand is a great way to stretch your budget dollars.
Here are some basic guidelines for you to buy second-hand baby safety products and help you to make sure you aren't sacrificing safety for price.
l. Always err on the side of caution and safety when buying second-hand baby products or taking hand-me-downs.
2. Check with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to make sure the product hasn't been recalled. If it has and there is a repair kit available, check to be sure it's been installed or order and install it yourself before using the product.
3. Inspect the product carefully. Don’t buy an item that has loose, missing or broken parts, is moldy, rusty or is more than "gently used.”
4. Advancements in product safety have come a long way in the last few decades—even the last few years for some products. The age of the product you are buying or borrowing second-hand baby gear can put your baby at risk for injury, because it might not meet current safety standards.
5. Especially when purchasing from a third party, you can't know the history of the product. Be prepared to walk away from the purchase or throw the product away if you find that the labeling is missing and/or the product has been recalled.
6. Read and carefully follow the instructions for the proper use of the product. If there are no instructions with the product you buy, check the manufacturer's website or give them a call.
7. Don't use products if you can't find instructions for them.
8. Follow your instincts. If you are the least bit unsure about the safety of a used baby product, it's better to buy new.
As long as the product meets current safety standards, second-hand baby gear that can be easily cleaned can be a great choice to buy or borrow:
§ Clothes
§ Books
§ Maternity clothes
§ Basic toys that are in “like new” condition and can be easily cleaned
